Small-Sized Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jar, attributed to the Stone or Penland Family, Buncombe County, NC origin, second half 19th century, highly ovoid jar with flaring rim and arched lug handles, the surface covered in a striated olive-brown alkaline glaze. Two unusual trapezoidal stamps, one bearing a raised-face "X" and the other bearing a raised-face "Y," are impressed below one handle. Shoulder with a 7/8" in-the-firing contact mark including a piece of adhered clay. Light wear to handles. A small rim chip. Some light surface wear to midsection. H 7 1/4".
