Three-Gallon Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jar, attributed to Pottersville Stoneware Manufactory, Edgefield District, SC, circa 1839, ovoid jar with narrow, semi-rounded mouth and thick lug handles, the surface covered in a mottled olive-colored alkaline glaze. Incised at shoulder with three vertical slash marks, denoting three gallons, as well as a horseshoe. The distinctive vertical slash marks on this jar are closely related to those found on a marked "N. RAMEY & CO." jar, made at Pottersville during the involvement of partner, Nathaniel Ramey, circa 1839. Provenance: Richard and Cindy Pearce Collection. Very nice condition with a faint 5" line from rim on reverse. H 14 1/2".
