Extremely Rare Two-Gallon Lidded Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Swan Decoration, Stamped "BURGER & LANG. / ROCHESTER, N.Y.," circa 1875, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, flared collar, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a swan with downward-curving neck and striped body, swimming atop stylized water. Slip-trailed "2" above and brushed cobalt highlight to maker's mark. Figural motifs from this period in Burger stoneware production are essentially non-existent. Exfoliation to front base of jar. A 7/8" chip to exterior of rim and a 1 1/4" chip to interior of rim. A small flake to shoulder on reverse. A minor in-the-firing iron ping near base on proper right side of jar. Some staining to exterior surface and water glass staining to interior. A faint 2 1/2" cross-shaped line to front beside a faint 1 1/2" Y-shaped line. A 6" crack on underside, adjoining a long horizontal crack at base. Lid with loss to knob and water glass staining. H 12".
