Three-Gallon Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jar, Stamped "VII," SC origin, second or third quarter 19th century, possibly Thomas Owenby Pottery, Union District, circa 1860, highly-ovoid jar with flattened rim and flattened lug handles, the surface covered in an olive-colored alkaline glaze. Impressed with large "VII" stamp at base in the manner of early Edgefield stoneware. Provenance: From a fifty-year SC collection. Restored crack in underside, extending to shoulder of jar below one handle. Restoration to edge and top of one handle, extending onto nearby shoulder area and rim. A minor chip to opposing handle. A thin, unrestored 3 1/2" crack from rim. Various in-the-firing bloated spots to surface, some burst. Traces of old green paint to surface. H 13 1/4".
