Scarce Stoneware Jug with Incised Drape-and-Tassel Decoration, Manhattan, NY origin, late 18th or early 19th century, highly-ovoid jug with footed base, heavily-tooled neck, and rounded mouth, decorated at the shoulder with an incised and cobalt-highlighted design of conjoined pairs of drapes, accented with stylized tassels or floral motifs. Brushed cobalt highlights to handle terminals. The decoration on this jug is an incised rendering of Thomas Commeraw's well-known impressed "clamshell" design. In his Commeraw's Stoneware: The Life and Work of the First African-American Pottery Owner, A. Brandt Zipp states that the relatively few surviving examples bearing this incised decoration were possibly made at a Crolius family shop located near Commeraw's own (pp. 177, 179), but the exact maker of these mysterious objects remains an open question. Excellent condition with minor chipping to base and minor white paint residue to surface. H 14 1/2".
