Scarce Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jar with Iron Slip Decoration, attributed to the Thomas Chandler Pottery, Edgefield District, SC, circa 1850, ovoid jar with flaring rim, decorated around the shoulder with a looping line motif in slip-trailed iron slip against a gray-green alkaline-glazed ground. As the vast majority of Chandler's jars of this capacity are cylindrically-shaped, the ovoid form of this example is considered unusual. A thin 5 1/2" x 1 1/4" cross-shaped crack from rim. A thin 3 3/4" x 3 1/2" inverted Y-shaped crack from rim. A few very minor rim nicks. H 10 3/4".
