Very Rare Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Iron-Slip Decoration, Edgefield District, SC or possibly TX origin, circa 1840-1860, ovoid jar with narrow, tapered rim and flattened lug handles, brush-decorated in iron slip with drape motifs around the shoulder and unusual wavy stripes around the body against an olive-brown alkaline-glazed ground. Made in the Edgefield style, the jar's curious decoration and slightly different rim and handle construction offer the possibility that it was made in Texas by an Edgefield-trained potter such as John Chandler. A 2" loss to one handle. A small chip to opposing handle. Three thin cracks from rim, measuring 4 1/4", 3", and 3". Two small handle chips. A thin, sealed 3" crack on underside, continuing 3" up base. Light rim wear. Flaking to interior base. H 12".
