Exceptional Open-Handled Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jar with Profuse Impressed Decoration, AL origin, probably Perry County, mid 19th century, ovoid jar with flared rim and two applied vertical handles, decorated around the majority of the jar's surface with a variety of impressed designs including paired leaves with crossed interiors, crosshatched tulips, paired leaves with barred interiors, inverted drape motifs, and vertical rounded leaves or feathers. Additional tooled treatment accents the rim and upper body. Surface covered in a mottled, gray-green alkaline glaze with glossy olive runs and areas of tannish spotting to the clay. Appealing form and extravagant use of impressed decoration. Among the finest Alabama stoneware jars that we have ever offered. Provenance: Acquired by Wahler in Florida. Chips and wear to rim. Wear to inner rim for lid. A thin 1" crack from rim. Some roughness to surface towards base of jar appears to be mostly or entirely as-made. Shallow flakes to underside. H 9 1/2".
