Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jar, Catawba Valley, NC origin, circa 1850-1880, squat-shaped, ovoid jar with large arched-lug handles, semi-rounded rim, and straight and wavy incised banding around shoulder. Surface covered in a streaky brown alkaline glaze. Very nice condition. A chip and a minor nick to one handle. A small chip and short, partially glazed-over in-the-firing fissure to opposing handle. Short, glazed-over in-the-firing lines to top of rim. Minor traces of old red paint to surface. A minor in-the-firing contact mark to base. H 8 3/4".
