Extremely Rare Small-Sized Stoneware Pitcher with Alkaline Glaze, Stamped "JS PENLAND," Buncombe County, NC, late 19th century, wheel-thrown, ovoid form with cut rim forming an upswept spout and applied strap handle with thumbrest and triangular terminal. Surface covered in a mottled amber-colored alkaline glaze. Impressed with the maker's mark of Joseph Sylvester Penland below handle. Exceptional form. Two large reglued pieces at spout. Some rim wear. Two tiny nicks to handle. H 6 3/8".
