Rare Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Churn with Iron-Slip Heart Motif, attributed to the Whelchel Family, Gaffney, SC area, late 19th century, semi-ovoid churn with flared rim and flattened lug handles, iron-slip-decorated with a rare stenciled design of a heart within a wreath. Gray-to-tan alkaline-glazed ground with white and glossy green runs. The only heart-decorated example of Whelchel stoneware that we have offered. Provenance: Ex-Tony Shank; Ex-Jimmy Allen. Very nice condition. A minor in-the-firing rim chip. A few minor base chips. A 4" diagonal line at base on front and two vertical lines at base on reverse, measuring 3 1/2" and 3", none of which appear to extend through to interior. H 16 1/2".
