Rare Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Cake Crock with Iron Slip Decoration, attributed to Phoenix Factory, Shaw's Creek, Edgefield District, SC, circa 1840, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and arched tab handles, brush-decorated in iron slip on the front, reverse, and below each handle with a Commeraw-style drape-and-tassel motif against a mottled rust to gray-green ground including heavier gray-green drips. Interior with gray-green alkaline glaze. Desirable form and decoration. Provenance: Wahler describes this crock in her notes with "Bought it from Lib and John Carbosco in Newberry, SC. . . Very nice and rare. Likely Phoenix Factory." Good condition. A shallow 1 1/2" chipped section to rim above one handle. Other small rim chips. A tight 6" line from rim on interior of crock, a small portion of which is visible on the exterior. Two 3 3/4" vertical lines from rim on interior, a small portion of each barely visible on exterior. A few minor nicks to one handle. A small base flake and a few minor base chips. H 8" ; Diam. 10 1/4".
