Three-Gallon Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jug, attributed to David Drake at Lewis Miles's Stony Bluff Manufactory, Horse Creek Valley, Edgefield District, SC, circa 1854 to early 1860s, highly-ovoid jug with distinctive tooled spout and applied strap handle with depressed terminal, the surface covered in a mottled-brown alkaline glaze with top-to-bottom run to left side and greenish drips to upper body. Incised with three vertical slash marks, denoting three gallons, at shoulder. Closely-related in glaze and form to Drake's iconic "Lm says this handle will crack" jug, dated "June 28. 1854," sold in Crocker Farm, Inc.'s November 11, 2019 auction, lot 1. Excellent, essentially as-made condition with a glazed-over, in-the-making base chip. H 14 3/4".
