Exceptional Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jug with Impressed Horseshoe, attributed to the Reverend John Landrum Pottery, Horse Creek Valley, Edgefield District, SC origin, possibly David Drake, circa 1825, rotund jug with tooled spout, the surface covered in a two-tone alkaline glaze, with heavier concentrations on the upper body creating a pale olive coloration and lighter-glazed areas below colored a reddish-brown. Large impressed horseshoe at base, measuring roughly 1/2" tall. Approximately four to five gallons in capacity. Perhaps the most wonderfully-potted vessel from Reverend John Landrum's pottery that we have offered, this work exhibits a spout construction in the manner of David Drake, although the piece may be earlier than Drake's known involvement with this manufactory. Provenance: Descended in the Kimbrough family; Southern Folk Pottery Collectors Society Auction, Bennett, NC. Excellent, essentially as-made condition. H 16".
