Fine Five-Gallon Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jar, Incised "Lm," David Drake at Lewis Miles's Stony Bluff Manufactory, Horse Creek Valley, Edgefield District, SC, circa 1855, thin-walled, highly-ovoid jar with with delicate, semi-rounded rim and arched lug handles, the surface covered in a gray-green alkaline glaze. Deeply-incised at the shoulder with the initials, "Lm," for Lewis Miles, along with an "X," one of Drake's hallmarks. Includes old wooden lid. Thumbprints on the interior base appear to display Drake's technique of coiling building bottom of the jar prior to throwing. Very nice condition with an approximately 3" line on underside, extending approximately 6" up front of jar. Very minor base chipping. Some in-the-firing fissures to interior base, not visible on exterior. H (excluding lid) 13 3/4".
