Rare and Fine Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Cake Crock with Two-Color Slip Decoration, Edgefield District, SC origin, circa 1845-1850, wide, cylindrical form with semi-squared rim and arched tab handles, decorated on the front and reverse shoulder with a drape motif applied in brushed iron slip and slip-trailed kaolin slip against a gray-green alkaline-glazed ground. Further decorated with brushed iron slip drapes below each handle. Combining desirable decoration and form, this lot is the first two-color slip cake crock from Edgefield that we have ever offered. Provenance: From a fifty-year SC collection. A restored 5/16" hole in underside. A thin top-to-bottom crack descending from a 1 1/2" flake on exterior of rim. A few small chips and light wear to interior of rim. A small chip and minor nick to one handle. A few minor nicks to opposing handle. A 4 1/4" line across underside, forming a 2 3/4" x 3 1/4" Y at base. A minor base chip. Some light water glass residue to base and interior. H 7 1/8" ; Diam. (at rim) 8 3/8".
