Ten-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Decoration, Stenciled "HAMILTON & JONES, / GREENSBORO. / PA.," circa 1875, semi-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-rounded rim, the upper body brush-decorated with freehand stripes, an undulating vine, and stylized floral devices. Midsection with Hamilton & Jones maker's stenciling surrounding scrolled floral stenciling and bordered by smaller stenciled designs. Base with freehand "10" flanked by graduated wavy lines, underscored by a straight and wavy freehand stripe. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. A 1 1/4" chip to interior of rim. A 2 1/4" scratch to front. An in-the-firing contact mark near midsection and at base on front. A salt drip at base on proper right side of jar. Staining to surface. H 21".
