Rare Two-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jug with Stenciled Star Motifs and Wheeling, WV, Advertising, Western PA origin, circa 1875, ovoid jug with tooled shoulder and wide spout, featuring the stenciled advertising, "McCabe, Kraft & Co. / No. 50 Main Street, / Wheeling , W . Va," surrounding three stenciled stars. Freehand vining above. Base with bold-faced stenciled "2" surrounded by a dotted border, flanked by dashes and underscored by a stripe. Cobalt highlights to handle terminal. A finely-decorated example of West Virginia advertising, mixing freehand and stenciled design elements. Heavy chipping to spout. Handle broken into three pieces and reglued, including two chips to handle. Stacker marks to shoulder. A small in-the-firing surface chip to shoulder. Some surface wear. H 14 1/2".
