One-and-a-Half-Gallon Lidded Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped "J. NORTON & CO. / BENNINGTON, VT," circa 1860, semi-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a crested bird perched on a stylized branch. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Includes salt-glazed lid, possibly original to the jar. Jar with small chips to interior of rim and inner rim for lid, in otherwise excellent condition with minor staining. Lid in excellent, essentially as-made condition. H 10 3/8".
