Rare Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jar with Iron-Slip Floral Decoration, Stamped "M," attributed to Robert Mathis at Phoenix Factory, Edgefield District, SC, circa 1840, ovoid jar with semi-rounded rim and vertical open handles, decorated on the front and reverse with fan-shaped floral motifs in brushed iron slip against a grayish alkaline-glazed ground. Iron slip brushwork to handle terminals. Impressed on shoulder of one side with the letter, "M," probably for Phoenix Factory partner, Robert Mathis. Desirable decoration, form, and maker. Professional restoration to one handle. Areas of professional restoration to rim. Professional restoration to a long inverted Y-shaped crack from rim. A 2" hairline from rim. A 2 1/2" hairline on underside, continuing approximately 1" up base. Flakes to interior base area. H 10 1/2".
