Four-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Stenciled Floral and Horse Motifs, Stenciled "PALATINE POTTERY Co. / PALATINE. / W. VA," circa 1880, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with an arched band of intricate scrolled floral stenciling above Palatine Pottery Co. maker's stenciling surrounding a stenciled design of a rearing horse. Base with stenciled "4." Freehand stripe decoration below rim and at base. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. A large, slightly-recessed in the-firing contact mark to reverse. Some in-the-firing clay residue to top of rim. A 5/8" in-the-firing flake to rim on front. Two minor chips to interior of rim. A 3" in-the-firing line to interior, not visible on exterior. Chips to end of proper right handle, the largest having occurred in the firing, including an in-the-firing contact mark below. H 14 1/2".
