Scarce Early-Period Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Face Jug, Signed "Lanier Meaders," Cleveland, GA, circa late 1960s-early 1970s, ovoid jug with hand-modeled and applied clay face including glazed, orb-shaped eyes with black-slip pupils, ears with incised and depressed details, crooked nose, and crooked mouth with rock teeth, the surface covered in a mottled, dark-olive alkaline glaze with reddish-brown hues. Underside incised with Lanier Meaders signature. Various attributes, including the face's glazed, ball-shaped eyes, rock teeth, reductive modeling, and style of glaze, identify this jug as an earlier work by Meaders. Excellent, essentially as-made condition with a minor in-the-firing fissure to underside. H 9 1/4".
