Rare Early-Period Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Face Jug, Signed "Lanier Meaders," Cleveland, GA, circa late 1960-early 1970s, ovoid jug with rounded spout, decorated with a hand-modeled and applied clay face featuring glazed, orb-shaped kaolin eyes with black pupils set within almond-shaped lids, crooked nose, pronounced ears with incised and impressed details, and open mouth with two rock teeth. Surface covered in a mottled reddish-brown to dark-olive alkaline glaze. Incised Lanier Meaders signature on underside. The overall style of this jug, including its glazed, ball-shaped eyes, rock teeth, type of glaze used, and reductive features, places it among Lanier Meaders's desirable earlier works, significantly rarer than his later production. Excellent, essentially as-made condition, retaining all of its original teeth. H 91/4".
