Unusual One-and-a-Half-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Floral Decoration and Star on Underside, Stamped "P. HERRMANN," Jackson Square Pottery, Baltimore, MD, circa 1860, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, thick, squared rim, and arched tab handles, brush-decorated on the front and reverse with a swag-and-hanging-flower motif. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Impressed with Peter Herrmann one-and-a-half-gallon maker's mark at shoulder. This early-period Herrmann includes a black star on the underside, the purpose of which is unknown. While Baltimore stoneware pieces with impressed stars at the shoulder exist, this jar is the first example featuring a star in black on the underside that we have seen. A small base chip, a minor base nick, and a minor nick to underside at edge. A 2" x 1 3/4" area of crazing on underside, continuing 3/4" up base. A small in-the-firing ping to reverse. H 10 3/4".
