Exceptional Two-Gallon Gallupville, NY Stoneware Advertising Cider Jug with Cobalt Double Bird Decoration, Stamped Twice "NEW YORK STONEWARE CO. / FORT EDWARD, NY," circa 1875, cylindrical jug with tooled spout and two handles applied at the shoulder, featuring the slip-trailed inscription, "Cider / Jug," flanked by two birds perched on leaves. Foliate decoration appears below and on the sides of the jug. Reverse inscribed in large script, "William / Beckers / Gallopvill(sic) / N.Y." Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and handle terminals. Among the most ambitiously decorated and inscribed examples of Fort Edward advertising stoneware that we have offered. Provenance: James Chebalo Collection. Both handles poorly restored. Restored spout chips. A small chip to interior of spout. Sealed crack across underside, forming a very large Y on one side and a 2 3/4" crack on opposing side. H 14".
