Very Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Advertising Crock with Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped "F A STARING / GROCERIES & PROVISIONS / HORSES & CARRIAGES TO LET / LITTLE FALLS NY," attributed to J. Norton & Co., Bennington, VT, circa 1860, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a bird perched on a stylized branch. Impressed above with the elaborate cobalt-highlighted advertising, "F A STARING / GROCERIES & PROVISIONS / HORSES & CARRIAGES TO LET / LITTLE FALLS N Y." Featuring good decoration and size, this crock is distinguished by its highly unusual and appealing advertising, which states that Staring offers "HORSE & CARRIAGES TO LET." Provenance: William Bouck Collection. Excellent condition with a small black-painted chip on interior of rim, small black-painted in-the-firing iron ping on interior and some spattered discoloration to surface. H 7 1/8".
