Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Elaborate Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped "C. HART. / SHERBURNE," NY State origin, circa 1860, semi-ovoid jug with semi-squared spout, decorated with a brushed and slip-trailed design of a large bird with spot-and-swag-decorated body and solid cobalt wing, perched on a looping flourish bearing three stylized flowers. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. A 1 3/4" crack on underside, extending up reverse and onto proper left shoulder, including staining. A 2 3/4" thin star-shaped crack emanating from a surface flake on jug's proper right side. A crack in upper and lower handle terminal. (Handle was not broken off and reglued.) Base area with a large salt drip, a 1 3/4" glazed-over line, and a 1" in-the-firing chip. Slumping to spout. Recent black ink inscription on underside, reading "Schaper." H 15 1/4".
