Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Cake Crock with Cobalt Man-in-the-Moon Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA," circa 1865, wide, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, brush-decorated with a crescent-shaped foliate design surrounding a long-nosed man's face. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and handle terminals. An iconic Central Pennsylvania motif, rarely seen on this form. Some missing areas of decoration, as-made. A few small areas of fry to decoration. Staining to surface. One rim chip. H 7 3/8" ; Diam. 10 1/2".
