Four Glazed Redware Cups with Incised Decoration, attributed to Henry Chapman Mercer's Moravian Pottery and Tile Works, Doylestown, PA, late 19th or early 20th century, each of flared form, decorated with incised tulip and floral motifs, featuring the Pennsylvania-German slogan, "Essen ist fur leib und leben / Drinken ist auch gut darneben (Eating is for existence and life, Besides drinking is also good) / 1793)." Two mugs glazed green and blue over an orange ground are unmarked. Two other mugs glazed green and blue glazes over a yellow-slip ground are marked "MORAVIAN / HCM," on underside. Two orange mugs and green-over-yellow mug in very nice condition with small base chips. Blue-over-yellow mug in excellent, essentially as-made condition with a small glazed-over chip on underside.
