Rare Six-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Bird-in-Wreath Decoration, Stamped "WHITES UTICA'," NY State origin, circa 1865, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles fashioned with original piercings to allow for a wire bail handle; front decorated with a slip-trailed design of a crested bird perched on a branch, surrounded by a large wreath accented with berries. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark. Outstanding decoration and impressive size. A thin 2 1/4" crack above one handle. A 1 3/8" line on underside, continuing as a diagonal crack extending from base on side of crock approximately 12" onto front shoulder of crock. Two shallow in-the-firing chips to interior of rim. A small in-the-firing iron ping to right of bird. H 1 4 1/2".
