Scarce Four-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Pheasant on Stump Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT," circa 1855, cylindrical jug with semi-rounded spout, featuring a slip-trailed design of a crested pheasant with turned head, perched on a stump flanked by grass. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Only the second four-gallon Norton single pheasant that we have offered, this work features a lesser-seen pheasant variant, which depicts the bird with a narrower neck and broader head. Essentially as-made condition with a few typical in-the-firing flaws: a 1" in-the-firing iron ping on reverse, which is partially glazed over, a 7/8" glazed-over dent to shoulder on reverse, a minor glazed-over dent at base on side of jug, and a small in-the-firing iron ping at base on front. 17 1/2".
