Fine Stoneware Jar with Incised Floral Decorations, Hudson River Valley origin, early 19th century, ovoid jar with footed base, heavily-tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and slightly-flared rim, decorated on the front and reverse with two different incised and cobalt-highlighted floral motifs accented with heavily-incised slashes throughout; one side features a daisy with impressed circle at center while the other features a stylized blossom with alternating oval-and-ellipse-shaped petals, including cobalt omitted on an inner series of petals. The daisy-decorated side appears to include traces of an iron slip coating. An elegantly-decorated example of early New York State stoneware. Literature: Illustrated in Paul Cushman: The Work and World of an Early 19th Century Albany Potter, p. 79, fig. 46a. Provenance: Warren F. Hartmann Collection. A small in-the-firing ping to left of daisy motif. A 1 3/4" in-the-firing flake to top of one handle. Tight lines to rim. Faint lines to base area, likely in-the-firing. Chipping around base. In-the-making glaze anomalies. H 11 1/2".
