Five-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Double-Handled Stoneware Jug, Stenciled "HAMILTON & JONES. / GREENSBORO. / PA.," circa 1875, ovoid jug with two applied vertical handles and delicately-tooled spout, featuring opposing freehand fuchsia designs above Hamilton & Jones maker's stenciling incorporating stenciled tulip and scrolled motifs. Base with stenciled "5" flanked by flourishes. Freehand stripe to base. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Areas of restoration to spout. A long flake to molding at base of spout. Crazing/tight lines throughout upper body on front and reverse, extending partway onto handles. A star-shaped spider line to midsection on reverse. Some wear to cobalt. A 3/4" glazed-over ping to midsection on front. A 3" in-the-firing contact mark to left of decoration on front. Some light surface wear to reverse. A few drip of old brown paint to surface. H 19".
