Fine Six-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Cobalt Paddletail Bird Decoration, Stamped "N.A. WHITE & SON, / UTICA, N.Y.," circa 1885, ovoid churn with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with an elaborate brushed and slip-trailed design of a crested bird with large paddle-shaped tail, perched on a flowering vine. Desirable size and form, featuring outstanding color. Areas of staining. A 4" spider line to surface under one handle, not visible on interior. A faint 3 1/4" inverted L-shaped line to surface to left of bird, not visible on interior. A 3 1/4" vertical line to midsection on reverse, not visible on interior. Chipping to inner rim for lid. Two minor chips to interior of rim. Minor in-the-firing pings to surface. Minor base wear. H 18 7/8".
