Scarce Three-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar with Impressed Sun Face Motif, Troy, NY origin, early 19th century, ovoid jar with footed base, heavily-tooled shoulder, and rounded lug handles, decorated on the front and reverse with an impressed and cobalt-highlighted medallion featuring a sun with human face. Brushed cobalt highlights to handle terminals. An in-the-firing contact mark to one sun face. Reverse with a 2 1/4" in-the-firing surface chip and an iron ping. Base with a 2 1/4" chipped section, additional chips, and a 1 5/8" U-shaped surface crack. In-the-firing fissures to underside. A small in-the-firing ping to interior of rim. Some staining to bottom half of jar. H 13 5/8".
