Rare Stoneware Face Jug with Cigar, attributed to Otto Brown, Bethune, SC or possibly NC or GA origin, second or early third quarter 20th century, cylindrical jug with applied facial features including eyes with pinched and pierced accents, elliptical eyelids, nose with recessed nostrils, mouth bearing china teeth and a hand-modeled clay cigar, and incised mustache. Surface covered in a chocolate-brown Albany slip glaze. Otto Brown (1899-1980) an itinerant member of the illustrious Brown family of potters, relied on his wife, Emmaeus, to decorate some of his ware, including his face jugs. This example displays a nose closely-related to those seen on later-period Edgefield, SC face vessels, possibly inspired by Brown's association with the Baynham family of potters in North Augusta, GA. Eyebrows lost during the firing. Loss to cigar. Some in-the-firing blistering to glaze. H 8 1/2".
