Six-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar, Stenciled "A. CONRAD. / SHINNSTON. / W. VA.," circa 1885, semi-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, featuring Alexander Conrad maker's stenciling surrounded by stenciled daisies, roses, and various foliate motifs. Stenciled "6" with flourishes above. Freehand stripe to shoulder. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Staining throughout. A thin 6 1/2" crack from rim. A partially restored 11 3/4" inverted Y-shaped crack to left side of jar. A chip to reverse end of one handle. Some light surface wear. H 16 3/4".
