Scarce One-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Bird-on-Stump Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT," circa 1855, semi-ovoid jug with semi-rounded spout, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a bird perched on a stump atop a grassy patch of ground. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark. Unusual design and desirable size to jug. A 1/2" hole in jug on front with a 3" line descending from it. A chip to base of handle. Two shallow chips (contact marks) to top of spout. Staining and some blue paint residue to surface. In-the-firing wrinkles in clay at base. A small base chip. An in-the-firing contact mark and small piece of adhered clay on bird's back. H 11".
