Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Batter Pail with Cobalt Pinwheel Floral Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG :PA," circa 1865, ovoid form with tubular pouring spout, handle at base on reverse, and applied clay tabs with wood-and-wire bail handle, brush-decorated on the front and reverse with a total of three quatrefoil, pinwheel-shaped floral motifs, accented with foliate devices between the petals. Freehand wreath decoration at base of spout, cobalt highlights to applied clay tab handles, and highlights to maker's mark. Includes tin cover. Large area of restoration to spout. Large area of restoration to one applied clay tab at shoulder. A small chip to handle on reverse. Some minor fry to cobalt. H 9 3/4".
