Three-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar, Stenciled "JAMES HAMILTON & CO. / GREENSBORO / PA.," circa 1875, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with freehand stripes at the shoulder, James Hamilton maker's stenciling and stenciled flourishes to the midsection, and a stenciled "3" with flourishes at the base, underscored by a freehand stripe. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. An L-shaped crack from rim on reverse, extending diagonally under handle on left side. An in-the-firing chip (contact mark) to rim and shoulder on front. Light wear to stenciling and some mottling to surface. H 13 1/2".
