Two-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped "J. NORTON & CO: / BENNINGTON VT," circa 1855, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a crested bird perched on an unusually-elaborate branch with leaves, accented with spotted trails. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Excellent condition with an in-the-firing lime ping below one handle, two tiny nicks to same handle, a few minor chips to interior of rim, some staining, and a minor in-the-firing surface fissure to underside. H 9".
