Fine Four-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Leaf Decoration, Stamped "EVAN R. JONES / PITTSTON, PA," circa 1875, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a large, boldly-brushed leaf in the manner of Cowden & Wilcox of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Strong decoration with exceptional color. An approximately 6 1/2" Y-shaped hairline below one handle. A 4" Y-shaped surface near midsection on reverse, not visible on interior. A glazed-over, in-the-making scratch to reverse. Two minor chips to interior of rim. Light surface staining. H 11 3/4".
