Two-Gallon Stoneware Batter Pail with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "LEWIS JONES / PITTSTON, PA," circa 1890, ovoid form with tubular pouring spout, handle at base on reverse, and pierced clay tabs with wood-and-wire bail handle; brush-decorated on the reverse with a large tulip motif and on the front with a tulip blossom surrounding base of the spout. This tulip motif is repeated around the clay tabs at the shoulder and cobalt dashes appear along the handle at the base, both unusual treatments. Typical cobalt highlights also adorn the terminals of this handle. Some faintness to decoration on reverse. A small spout chip. A chip to interior of rim. A small in-the-firing iron ping to reverse, a small iron ping to right side, and small iron ping to interior. H 11 1/8".
