Outstanding Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Bird-in-Wreath Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA," circa 1865, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, brush-decorated with a bird perched on a stylized mound surrounded by a large wreath. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and handle terminals. Excellent clarity, coverage, and color to the design, an unusual rendering as the bird is depicted standing atop of ground with legs visible as opposed to nesting. A 1 7/8" hairline from rim on front. An approximately 6 3/4" x 7 1/4" Y-shaped hairline to left side of jar's front. A faint 2 3/4" line to right side of jar's front. Water glass staining to interior. Some staining to exterior. A thin 1 3/4" crack from rim. Adhered residue from use to top of rim. and underside. A minor chip to interior of rim. A network of tight lines to underside. H 11 3/4".
