Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "G. BRAYTON / UTICA / UTICA," NY State origin, circa 1827-1832, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, tall collar, and applied lug handles, brush-decorated with a leafy stem bearing fan-shaped blossoms and two buds. A freehand-cobalt 1 under one of the handles. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and handle terminals. Impressed "UTICA" a second time at the top of the design. A long horizontal crack at base. An in-the-firing line from rim on interior, not visible on exterior. Minor traces of old paint to interior. H 8 5/8".
