Rare Stoneware Pitcher with Cobalt Floral and Spot Decoration, attributed to the Remmey Pottery, Philadelphia, PA, circa 1865, ovoid pitcher with footed base and tooled accents to collar and body, brush-decorated with a two-stemmed tulip plant emanating from a highly unusual spotted mound. Additional spots accent the leaves at the base of the plant and a single leaf decorates the area between the two stems. Tulip blossom decoration to collar. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. The heavy application of spots, a decorative treatment rarely seen from this maker, adds folk art appeal to this example. A thin crack across underside, extending 5 1/4" up front of pitcher. Additional surface lines to underside, not visible on interior. A 3" hairline from rim to right of spout. A 1" hairline from rim on reverse. Minor nicks to spout. Light surface wear. A small in-the-firing stone ping to left side of pitcher. Some exfoliation to interior base. H 9 1/4".
