Exceedingly Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Cake Crock with Cobalt Deer Scene, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON VT.," circa 1855, shallow, cylindrical form with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a stag with turned head and spotted body, reclining atop a hill beside a tree stump. The scene includes a split-rail fence in the background with a pine tree and a second fence in the foreground. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. This work features an excellent rendering of the Nortons' classic deer motif, exhibiting crisp slip-trailing, superb color and contrast, and good coverage across the vessel's front. It ranks among the most important Norton deer-decorated crocks that we have offered due to the extreme rarity of the form for this motif. Very nice condition. A thin 4 1/2" diagonal crack from rim on reverse. A thin 1 3/4" crack from rim above one handle and a small in-the-firing ping above same handle. H 7 5/8" ; Diam. 11 3/4".
