Exceptional Six-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Elaborate Cobalt Leaping Deer Decoration, Stamped "J. BURGER, JR. / ROCHESTER, N.Y.," circa 1885, ovoid churn with tooled shoulder, flared collar, and applied lug handles, decorated with a large slip-trailed design of a leaping deer with striped and spotted body, including a tree in the background. Slip-trailed "6" to shoulder. Brushed cobalt highlight to maker's mark. Featuring crisp detail and unusually-vibrant cobalt for this maker, this churn is arguably the finest deer-decorated work by John Burger, Jr. that we have offered. A 13 1/2" crack from reverse. A thin 6" crack from rim on reverse. A small, semi-circular surface crack to rim on reverse. Tight lines below and to the right of the deer. A few short lines to right of deer. Small chips to inner rim for lid. H 20".
