Rare Molded Stoneware Pitcher, Stamped "D & J HENDERSON / Jersey City," NJ origin, circa 1829-1833, molded pitcher with ornamental handle, decorated with relief rose-and-thistle motifs around the shoulder, acanthus leaf devices below, and a design of classical figures within a flowering vine around the waist. Underside impressed with Henderson maker's mark along with a relief C and cross. Pieces produced at this short-lived manufactory represent some of the most high-styled stoneware produced in 19th century America. A selection of marked examples reside in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, NY. Restoration to spout, with some overpaint extending to lower areas of collar that appear to be unrestored. Some additional restoration to rim. A small Y-shaped line in underside, probably in-the-making, not visible on interior. H 8 3/4".
