Unusual Sponge-Decorated Redware Spittoon, probably Philadelphia, PA origin, mid 19th century, cylindrical form with footed base, carved oval opening at shoulder and recessed circular opening in top, decorated in manganese with sponged fan-shaped and semi-circular designs around the top and dashed sponging around the edge, the surface covered in a clear lead glaze. Wear around top edge. Base chips, including a 2 1/2" chipped section to foot. H 3 5/8" ; Diam. 7 3/4".
